In his pastel landscapes, Steven’s use of heavily blended soft colours echo the morning mists which form on the Fundy shore, roll over North Mountain and flow through the valley fields and orchards, where he spends much of his time.
Steven E Coffin is an amateur artist living in Berwick, in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley. In his work, he tries to capture some of the beauty he sees in the people and places around him. He finds inspiration in his ramblings around the province and his natural curiosity about what is around the next bend in the road. Memories of these trips, backed up with photographs and quick sketches form the basis for much of his work. He occasionally works with watercolour and acrylic paints, but he is best known for his soft pastel drawings.
Although he is not formally trained, Steven has benefited from classes through NSCAD Extended Studies, with Jane Schlosberg of the Dartmouth Art Students League (DASL), with Twila Robar-Decoste in Aylesford, NS, and from various workshops with a wide variety of artists. Currently, Steven continues to explore the use of soft pastels with Corinne Ledson-Silver. He is constantly inspired by the work of other artists that he meets.
Steven has been a member of the Artists Circle of the Annapolis Valley since 2016. He regularly shows his work at the Margaretsville Art Shack. In February 2023 two of his pieces were accepted in a show at Gallery 97 in Lower Sackville. In 2022, he contributed to an Artists Circle group show at the Artsplace Gallery in Annapolis Royal. He also showed at the former MoJo Gallery in Annapolis Royal, at CORAH in Middleton and at the annual DASL art show.
